des(1-3)IGF-1 is an endogenously produced protein and a truncated form of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). It is missing the first three amino acids at the N-terminus, giving it a total of 67 amino acids compared to the 70 amino acids in IGF-1. This alteration leads to significantly lower binding to insulin-like growth factor-binding proteins (IGFBPs) and approximately a tenfold increase in potency in vivo compared to IGF-1.
